Boazum
You are searching for a charming Dutch village? Then Boazum might be your next destination! Located in the Frisian province, in the rural municipality of Litterenseradiel, 400 inhabitants are expecting your arrival in one of the first described communities in Friesland… Due to the rich soil, the first people coming to Boazum were farmers, but the landscape was flooded in regular intervals, which made it difficult to live in the area. But impressed by the natural surrounding and the fertile ground the farmers decided to build artificial hills, which saved them from the flood, but the landscape was still flooded. Therefore dikes have been built to protect the area and direct the water in artificial canals through the village and the whole region.
The safe area meant that more and more people came to the small village, which consists only of houses build in accordance with the typical Dutch architecture and that is why the charming Frisian atmosphere is spread in every corner of the village.
Today the village has an own kindergarten and also a primary school were the children from the nearby villages are taught. The Café located in the middle of the village invites guests to have a good Friesian cup of coffee and for the inhabitants the location is also used as a meeting point.
Accommodation facilities are available in form of two bed & breakfast farmhouses and a camping area located in Boazum. It is the perfect place to escape from the everyday stress and enjoying the beautiful surrounding Boazum offers to its visitors. Not only families will feel comfortable in the farmhouses, but also business people, singles or luxurious interested tourists will be impressed by the generosity of the accommodations, including “Free Frisian Flair”.
As one of the villages located in the famous 11 – city – road in Friesland, Boazum is perfectly suitable for biking, extended walks, boot tours and ice skating on the artificial canals in winter days. A special road from Leeuwarden to Sneek will lead you through Boazum and other charming villages.
The church, which is an example of Romanesque twelfth – century architecture and build around 1200 on a protected area to be safe against the floods, is the landmark of Boazum. It is the biggest church in the region and with its Ottonian fresco portraying, which has been found during the war, because it was hidden in the wall, is the pride of the inhabitants. The with love renovated church can be visited during summertime and the courteous couple Henk and Swantje Kroes will be glad to inform you about the many interesting stories the church contains within itself.
In October the small village turns every year to the event location of “De Nacht Fan Boazum!” which is an annual event turning the quite and peaceful village into a meeting place for hundreds of young people enjoying different bands the whole night in a large outdoor tent. It is organized and supported by the locals and therefore the proceeds is regularly used to improve the village and especially the church.
