De Hemmen
To the east and southeast of Sneek is a beautiful, wide landscape with a few scattered terp (mound) villages and one of the Frisian Eleven cities, IJlst. The area forms the transition from the lake area to the former Middelzee, a sea arm that deeply penetrated Friesland from the north. Here are a number of so-called "hempolders", which were constructed in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. They were needed because the area after the silting up of the Middelzee could no longer lose its water through natural run-off.
The current, wonderfully winding road from Westhem, via IJlst to Sneek, follows the route of the old Hemdijk. The southern shore of the Middelzee was a little further north and ran from Westhem to the northeast, eastward to Folsgare, westward to Tjalhuizum and northward to Tirns.
You can easily explore this beautiful and interesting area by both car, preferably a convertible when the weather permits it, bicycle or on foot if you feel like it. Or of course from the water. IJlst is connected to the Frisian Lake District via the Wijde Wijmerts and the Geeuw. And the Bolswardervaart runs in a north-westerly direction, which is (just like the Geeuw) part of the Middelseeroute.
