Welcome to Stavoren, the oldest and maybe the most interesting city of the Frisian Elfsteden. More than 1000 years ago, Stavoren was a rich and prosperous city, but in 991 it was sacked by the Normans. In 1060, Stavoren was the first city of the Frisian Elfsteden that received the city rights. Furthermore, Stavoren became a member of the Hansa Association, which was responsible for controlling the trade between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. In 1345, Willem IV earl of Holland tried to conquer the city, but he failed in the famous battle of Warns.

Nowadays, Stavoren has become an authentic and beautiful Ijsselmeer city. In the summer, there are a lot of people in the city due to the many water sport opportunities offered there and because of the harbour, which is an important harbour in Friesland.

The surroundings of Stavoren has a lot to offer: its great located close to the Ijsselmeer, you can feel the historic atmosphere, there are nice shops, numerous galleries and a museum. Additionally, there is a steam train connection to the city Sneek and many other possibilities for tourists to take part in boat and bus tours to discover the surroundings.
