Ten noorden en oosten van Franeker
This area is the backdrop for the first part of the most infamous route of the Elfstedentocht, the stretch from Franeker to Dokkum. The famous ice skating route takes you past Dongjum, Boer and Ried, mound villages on an old salt marsh along a former sea arm stream, the Ried.
The entire area is a wonderful example of an old salt marsh landscape. Quiet, picturesque mound villages, ancient churches, salt marshes, remnants of old sea arms, dikes, beautiful vistas, peace and quiet ... An ideal area for cycling, walking, getting a breath of fresh air and relaxing.
