Het Lauwersmeergebied

Familiar with the Lauwersmeer? No, then be certain to explore this area at least once by land or boat. The lake, with its many former gullies creates alternating areas of water, marsh, reed-lands, woodland and moorland, the majority of which remains untouched, is continually adjusting to the natural changes going on within it.

Prior to 1969 the part of the Dutch Wadden that is the Lauwersmeer, was guaranteed to be regularly flooded by storms from the north west. This came to an end on the 25th of May 1969 when the dike was built. The Lauwersmeer then became a reservoir overflow water from Friesland and Groningen and the excess water was released with the ebb of the tide through the sluice gates at Lauwersoog. The seals, plaice and common dab, Glasswort and Sea-lavender left for good. But luckily nature has kept pace with these changes providing a fascinating and ever changing range of flora and fauna.

The North Wind still blows in the fresh, salty sea air and the coast is still witness to superb sunsets which are only improved by heavy skies and the threat of a storm in the air.
