I met several cyclists in Harlingen who were looking for ’the whale fountain’. You will initially find this in vain near the ferry port or in the city canals. In retrospect, it makes sense that the whale is not found there. After all, a whale does not belong in a city canal but in open water, directly connected to the sea.
The whale fountain is located next to the breakwater that protects Harlingen harbor against storms and waves The whale, actually a sperm whale, was designed by the artists Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla.
Logically, the sperm whale refers to days gone by in which Harlingen played an active role in whaling.
At regular intervals, the sperm whale is heard by spraying up a powerful jet of water. That is why the Zuiderpier regularly shows a colorful collection of photographers who are all waiting for the whale to spray. Because a photo of the Harlinger whale fountain without a water spray is just not completely complete.
